- New York's Catskills are lovely all year for hiking or skiing, but the fall stands out for foliage.
- If you want to go leaf-peeping, there are many cozy, affordable Catskills cabins on Airbnb.
- We found the best Airbnb cabins in the Catskills priced to start under $250 per night.
With fall fast approaching, many East Coasters are on the hunt for an easy weekend away immersed in crisp Autumn air.
I grew up in the Northeast and lived in New York City for 10 years and highly recommend the Catskills for an easy nature-filled escape from the city. I visited the Borscht Belt as a kid, planned ski trips to Hunter Mountain with friends, and booked weekend getaways with my husband as an adult.
And while the Catskills shine year-round, the fall is especially lovely for curling up in a cozy cabin after a scenic day of leaf-peeping. As temps dip, the leaves put on a spectacular show, with foliage turning rich hues of crimson, gold, and orange.
If that sounds pretty perfect, keep reading for my Airbnb rentals that are all available to book starting under $250 per night.

FAQ: Catskills cabins
Where are the Catskills?
The Catskills refers to a region of mountains in New York State, located roughly between the capital of Albany and New York City. It includes 700,000 acres of Catskill Park and covers four counties.
What is there to do in the Catskills?
The Catskills are renowned for outdoor pursuits of all kinds. In winter, outdoor enthusiasts flock to popular places such as Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain to hit the slopes. In warmer weather, discover lush mountain blooms and stunning fall foliage, hike on nature trails, take a dip in wide-open lakes, sip on craft brews, shop at local farm stands, and browse antique wares. It's all there.
Where should I stay in the Catskills?
If you wish to ski or snowboard, it's best to stay close to your mountain of choice near towns like Phoenicia, so as not to spend too many hours driving each way. Otherwise, rural towns run the gamut and some of the best Airbnbs are located amid total wilderness.
How far are the Catskills from New York City?
The Catskills are roughly three hours from New York City by car, depending on your destination. Amtrak also serves the area along the Hudson River, up to Poughkeepsie. Bus lines offer varied access as well.
If like many city dwellers, you don't have a car, car rental deals are always available, and experts say renting one in a pandemic is safe. For further guidance, we rounded up the best car rental companies here.
Is it safe to rent a vacation rental in the Catskills?
The CDC says fully vaccinated people can safely travel in the US.
Additionally, experts we spoke to said private home vacation rentals on Airbnb are safe, especially compared to hotels. They promote social distancing, and all hosts are required to follow Airbnb's enhanced cleaning procedures.
However, be sure to still follow CDC and local guidelines in addition to washing your hands frequently, wearing your mask in public areas, and following social distancing.
While many of these Airbnbs are currently open, and more isolated than other travel spots, you'll still want to assess your own individual risk factors when deciding if it's a safe option. And, with plans constantly in flux due to the pandemic, it's also worth double checking any listings cancellation policies before booking.
What is Airbnb's cancellation policy?
When booking on Airbnb, it's important to note the cancellation policy. Each individual host sets their own policies, which range from lenient to extremely strict. Be sure to understand the policy of the home before you book and click here for a full breakdown of Airbnb's cancellation policies.
