Those who participated in the emotional celebration of Monteith's life included Glee cast and crew, writers and producers, Fox execs, close friends and family of the late actor. Some of Michele's close friends also flew in for it to support her and to remember Monteith. There were about 160 people at the memorial, which took place at Paramount studios where Glee films, and everyone wore black ribbons in honor of Cory.

Monteith was found dead at age 31 in a Vancouver hotel room on July 13. Autopsy and toxicity results showed that the actor died of a drug overdose with heroin and alcohol found in his body. Monteith, who first entered rehab at 19, had a long history of substance abuse.
