Over the years, Dawson has shared how important her mom has been in her life.

Recently, the actress admitted that having a mom give birth at such a young age (16 to be exact), was a valuable lesson. "I didn't even have sex until I was 20," the actress confessed to HuffPost Live. "I was deathly afraid of being a teenage mom."

Her unconventional childhood, however, still paved the way for great success in adult life. While accepting her ALMA Award last month, Dawson couldn't help but thank her mother for all that she's done.

"'Tonight, I am joined by my mother, whom you also honor this evening because it is through her sacrifices, her dedication, and her love and nurturing, that I have become the woman I am today," she told the crowd.
