Wednesday Addams Makeup Is Trending On TikTok - Heres How To Do It

September 2024 · 3 minute read

With Halloween round the corner and ‘goth glam’ still a TikTok make-up sensation, Wednesday Addams' makeup continues to be an inspiration to us all. Spurred on by last years Netflix series, aptly titled Wednesday in which Jenna Ortega plays the main character, her smudged black eyeliner and deep plum lip colour is en pointe for those of us yearning for a grungier make-up look that's more than a smokey eye.

With TikTok videos aplenty showing us how to achieve the trend, user @melybaby.1 gives a detailed account of how to recreate Wednesday's look with a light foundation, contoured cheeks and a soft red eyeshadow shade underneath her eyes to create the illusion of under eye bags. She then completes the look with soft brown eyeshadow to create a smokey eye, black winged eyeliner both on her eyelid and underneath her eye, and finishes off the look with a plum lip colour.

Wednesday Addams step by step:

If you prefer easy instructions, we asked make-up artist Ciara O'Shea, to break down Wednesday's look so you don't even have to leave this page to perfect your macabre make-up mood.

Step 1: “Start with a matte primer to give the skin a velvety finish before applying a matte foundation and working in a powder foundation - I'd recommend MAC's studio fix powder foundation. The idea here is to have a beautiful matte opaque and flawless base so keep each layer light and considered for the best finish.”

Step 2: “The quickest way to get the eyes done is to use a cream eyeshadow like Victoria Beckham's EyeWear sticks. Use them all over the eye and under the lower lash then get a soft blender brush and smoke it out around the eye and up to the browbone. Next take a black eyeliner (Glamour suggests ByTerry Crayon Blackstar Eyeliner) to the root of the lower lashes and outer corner of the top lashes and keep it soft and gentle, nothing too harsh. Finish with lots of light layers of mascara - Clarins Wonder Perfect 4d is a lengthening mascara that's fantastic for this.”

Step 3: “Give the cheeks a soft contour using a product like Makeup by Mario's Soft Sculpt Shaping Stick that helps create that ‘hollow' effect on cheeks and has a matte finish then add your lip in a rusty, plummy shade - 19/99 Beauty Tinted Balm in Terra is perfect.”

The actual products used on set

If accuracy is important to you and you want the ‘exact’ replica of Ortega's look, the hair and make-up artist used on Wednesday - Tara McDonald revealed exactly what products she used to beauty expert Cat Quinn.

“I’m the first person to tell you Jenna Ortega’s exact lip colour in Wednesday,” Quinn claimed. “Makeup designer Tara McDonald told me exclusively that Wednesday is wearing a MAC lip pencil in Nightmoth (£18) with clear [lip] balm.”

In follow up videos, Quinn revealed the products that Ortega uses under her eye, including MAC script (£17) on the top and under her eye, MAC carbon (£17) to act as an eyeliner, and smudged MAC carbon and glitch in the matrix (£17) on the top lash line to create a smokey eye look.

As for freckles and contour, Quinn says McDonald used a sheer tinted foundation as Ortega’s base so not to cover up her natural freckles. She then used MAC sculpt powder (£18) and MAC shadowy powder (£18) to create the “half dead” look.

Now all you need to do is nail your braids, fold your arms and channel your best ‘dead to me’ look.
